The room wakes before you do, and it does it quietly.

It keeps its voice low.
Every material in the room once stood outside it — clay from the tank country, lime wash, timber the colour of shade.
The chalet does not perform. Its luxuries are the older kind: a cross-breeze that arrives on schedule, deep shade at noon, lamplight the colour of tea at night, and a bed placed so the first thing you see in the morning is leaves.
Days here have a simple architecture. Tea on the verandah before the sun clears the canopy; the jeep at the hour the herds decide; a long shower and a longer dinner; then the jungle’s night shift, heard from a chair you will not want to give back.
